PROJECTS

FLASHPOINT (2003)

Our first film project, Flashpoint told the story of a fighter pilot in a future war who tries to prevent the genocide of an alien race. It starred Mike Tam as Mark Bishop and Jan Jaskiewicz as Ken Chabra and co-starred Andrew Sydor as the ship's captain and Richard Rzeszutek as the ship's operations officer.

This was the film we made for our graduating-year high school art show and it was very well received despite the poor quality of execution. Production on Flashpoint was a total nightmare, complete with actors gone MIA, lost CGI footage, poor chromakey ("green screen") integration, and terminal lack of budget. However, we view it as a reference point of our capabilities at the time and also as an example of what not to do in the future.

It was produced with the help of our sister company Kicking Duck Productions and is currently unavailable for viewing.

RED MARS (2005)

This short is a fake TV commercial for a fictional toy line that I had to create for a second-year university project. In an alternate universe where the Soviet Union never fell, but instead colonized Mars and held the Earth hostage with 10,000 nuclear warheads, a futuristic Green Beret fighting for democracy must face off against the entire Red Army in order to free Earth.

It is written as a parody against the over-zealous American mentality to overthrow communism (such as during the McCarthy era). The project drips with overblown characters and philosophies, propaganda posters and "gung-ho" sentiment, all integrated into the guise of a commercial for a line of children's toys.

EVENT HORIZON (2006)

This film was made for a class project and was enthusiastically received by those who saw it (We watched it twice in class!) It takes place in the massive online community known as Second Life. The project asked us to explore how the world and technology would change in the future, with consideration taken from Second Life. What we did was explore how Second Life would change. In this case, what would happen if the problems of the real world were to manifest themselves in the virtual world. Event Horizon deals with the subject of cyber-terrorism and how a determined individual could potentially destroy the entire virtual world and swindle its citizens out of all their currency.

SHADOW OF THE RAVEN (2006)

This film was made for the same class as Event Horizon, again dealing with Second Life. This time, however, we decided to set the film in the real world, in a dystopian film-noir-inspired future. This film deals more with technology than does the previous one, and all of it is inspired by what people can do in Second Life. Things like accessing information about a person (viewing their profile) or taking screenshots from your character's point of view. We explored them and put them in this film. It was not as well received as Event Horizon, however, possibly because it was longer (SOTR is 15 minutes long, compared to EH's 10). However, this film stands on its own without the need for explanation and it is currently my favourite.

THE DAEDALUS AGENDA (2007)

This film was made for a fourth-year class called Images and Practices of Technology. The film deals with the questions of ethics and technology, specifically whether or not artificial intelligences can be found guilty of crimes in the same way humans can.
